Have you ever noticed how car mirrors can distort the reflection of your baby in the backseat or how they’re non-functional at night? It was during our drive home from the hospital after delivering our secondborn that I first became aware of this phenomenon, even though it wasn’t my first time utilizing the mirror.

I think the secondborn’s smaller frame made me realize how hard it can be to get a clear view of their face when they are in an infant carrier. Unfortunately, this realization also occurred during one of those moments when my husband had forgotten to adjust the mirror before we set off. Our new baby was crying in the back and all I could see was her tiny hand flailing about as she tried to self-soothe. I knew then and there that we needed a better solution.

Fortunately, there is a solution! Car baby monitors come equipped with night vision features and offer wide-viewing lenses, which are not provided by car mirrors. I have appreciated these car monitors for their ability to get a good view of my newborn’s face.

In this post, I have reviewed the best car baby monitors you can get on the market today that will assist you in monitoring the baby sitting in the back seat of your car.

The images below show how you can use a baby mirror or a baby monitor to view your kid from the back seat as you drive.

Like many parents, I always got super anxious when I first started driving with my baby in the car and had to pull over every few minutes to check on the baby. For those in the US, all states now require parents to have the baby in the back seat and a rear-facing car seat until they are at least 2 years old and this makes it very difficult to check on them when driving.

While the car camera was helpful, I always thought I wasn’t getting a good view and needed to actually stop and check on the baby physically. Sometime last year, I was told of a baby monitor for the car and it got me very interested as I imagined the possibilities the baby monitor would offer.

You can choose to use a wifi-connected or a non-connected monitor for use in a car. Most of the ones listed below do not rely on Wifi as you just need to attach/mount the camera facing your baby on the back of the front seat.

Overall Best Car Camera

DoHonest Baby Car Camera

In this 2024 update of best car cameras, I must admit that the DoHonest Baby Car Camera deserves special mention and we are adding it to this list of car mirror cameras as our top recommendation. I was struck by several things but let me start with the design. As a parent to two young toddlers, I have found this backseat camera to be an absolute game changer.

The DoHonest Baby Car Camera is a 7-inch rotating backseat camera that provides you with a 150° view of the rear-facing car seats, although it can pan 180° both sides to give you up to 360° view. This means that you can easily keep an eye on both your children at the same time without having to turn your head. This feature is particularly useful for parents with multiple children, as it eliminates the need for constantly shifting their focus between the two car seats.

Not forgetting the powerful suction cup mount that gives you a stable and vibration-free view of the camera in its crystal clear HD 1080P video. This ensures that you can closely monitor your children’s movements and activities in high definition. Say bye to the grainy and dancing-dancing-unstable mirror mounting.

But the versatility of the mounting is unbeatable. You can mount it anywhere – in the dashboard, in the center console, windshield, or on the headrest. The manufacturer claims it takes 3 mins to fully install it with its easy velcro straps but maybe plan for 5 mins tops.

Below is a quick 1:40 mins video showing this baby car monitor;

This car camera is special in that it has 940nm IR LEDs which automatically give you a clear night vision view when the ambient light is too low. Compared to most car cameras with 850nm IR night vision such as Zooby, this camera delivers super high-quality images at night with the 940nm IR. Not only does this make it easier to see your kids in the dark, but it also ensures that they are not disturbed by any bright lights from the camera. Given that Zooby’s car camera is nearly four times the price of the DoHonest model, you can be confident that you’re getting excellent value for your money.

This V9 model is an upgrade and you can charge it with your car’s cigarette lighter. This is a game-changer. No other model in this list gives you this convenience.

To demonstrate how DoHonest, the manufacturer stands behind this monitor, they offer 3 years warranty! That’s unbeatable – and perhaps among a few products that offer such on Amazon.

On its Amazon page, you can check out a few videos to give you an idea of this device’s user-friendliness.

Best Car Baby Monitors and Mirrors Buying and User Guide:

Why use baby car monitors and mirrors:

Prevent choking:

If your baby is old enough to eat solids, they might be susceptible to choking. Having a clear view of your child can help you keep an eye on them while driving and react immediately if needed. To minimize choking, avoid giving your little one hardy candy or any form of candy as they are the main choking hazards as per saferides4kids.org

Monitor sleeping position:

Please note that experts strongly advise against allowing babies to sleep in a car seat or any inclined position and a baby car monitor can help you monitor to ensure they are safe. The risk of positional asphyxia arises when the child’s head and neck are positioned in a way that obstructs their airway and car monitors with night vision can give you a glimpse of your baby during the day or at night.

Check to see if they are still belted.

Sometimes, little ones can accidentally slide out of their seat while you’re driving. Having a car mirror or monitor can be incredibly helpful in keeping an eye on them and ensuring their safety.

Peace of mind:

Having an easy way to check on your baby while driving can give you peace of mind and reduce anxiety. It can also help you focus more on the road, knowing that your child is safe and sound.

DIY car baby monitor

As I first started researching how I could find some DIY solutions to install a baby cam to monitor the baby on the rear-facing seat, I found some tips and tricks online. Below is one picture of GoPro used as a baby car seat cam and it got me interested

image showing how you can install baby car monitor or mirror on a car seat headrest
Image showing car seat monitor on a car seat headrest

The below DIY baby cam video streaming trick got me into some serious research session as I really wanted to figure out how to do it. I thought it’d be very easy for us to have a baby cam such as Go Pro shown above streaming on a display screen shown below.

That said, this was one of the options but we ultimately ended up with Yada car baby monitor reviewed above as our car video/tech system couldn’t work with the Go Pro.

Factors to consider when choosing a baby car monitor:

Decide on wired or wireless:

You have the option to choose between a wired or wireless car baby monitor. While cords can pose strangulation hazards, there are ways to address this issue, such as running the cords under the mat. However, wireless options are generally considered superior in terms of safety and convenience.

If your budget allows, go for brands that utilize wireless transmission technology, such as Bluetooth, DECT, or FHSS.

Decide on either a connected or non-connected monitor:

If you want a car monitor that allows you to connect to your phone app, you need to choose a WiFi car monitor brand that comes with a secure phone app. Ensure that the wifi car monitor option you choose encrypts its data and have superior safety protocols. Don’t pick monitor apps with insecure app infrastructure such as these 4.

If you pick a non-Wifi brand, go for those with stable signal strength and with at least a 5-inch display screen.

Night vision:

Pick car monitor brands that come equipped with invisible infrared night vision that allow you to see your baby even in the dark. Also, check for monitor brands with adjustable brightness and contrast control capabilities.

Durability:

Go for a car mirror or monitor that is strong enough to withstand vibrations from driving on different terrain. You do not want to be constantly adjusting it while driving.

Installation:

Choose a brand that makes installation easy and quick, especially if you are not tech-savvy. A car monitor that comes with adhesive or straps for easy attachment is a plus. Some allow you to easily install in the seat’s headrest.

Design:

Choose a design that complements your car’s interior and does not distract you while driving. Some brands offer sleek and stylish designs, while others have more basic options.

Anti-glare:

Make sure the baby car mirror you choose has an anti-glare feature to prevent the reflection from blinding you while driving. This will ensure maximum safety and convenience for both you and your baby.

Power source:

Consider those that allow you to choose between plugging into a cigarette lighter, using USB-charging or using rechargeable batteries. This will come in handy during long drives or when you do not have access to an outlet.
