A long-range baby monitor allows for secure monitoring in large or thick-walled homes. The stable, high-power signals maintain uninterrupted connections, giving long-range monitors an advantage as the top choice for big houses.
To compile an objective list of monitors with long-distance connectivity, we initially gathered a selection of monitors from Amazon claiming a range of over 900 ft in open-field settings. Subsequently, we analyzed 20 reviews that discussed ‘range’, while monitoring associated terms such as ‘signal drop’, ‘losing signal’, and ‘connection’ within the reviews. We combine these user reviews with our testing analysis based on our observations.
We were able to get a hold of a few top-rated long-range monitors for thorough testing. Our evaluation criteria extended beyond signal distance, encompassing signal strength at various distances, instances of signal drop, time between dropouts, outage notification settings, distance before complete outage, multi-channel communication, and the longest distance for signal presence. Additionally, we assessed signal-boosting features like antennas and stability enhancements such as DECT6.0 technologies.

Bonoch Baby Monitor:
The Bonoch Baby Monitor stands out as our best baby monitor for thick concrete walls, excelling in 6 out of 7 evaluation metrics. It boasts an impressive range of up to 1200 ft in an open-field setting, about 600 ft lower than the 1800 ft range claimed by Bonoch. Our testing revealed its signal reliably maintained connection through 7 thick walls and up to 10 regular walls, including 2 wooden obstructions.
Our test location had only one floor, yet the signal strength was excellent, reaching the furthest corner of the upper floor and even penetrating the basement. I was extremely impressed that the signal remained at over 80% when the camera was placed on the ground floor, regardless of whether it was in the basement or the upper floor.
I appreciated the green light as a reliable signal connection indicator. It was intuitive and only experienced the blinking green (the loss of signal indicator) when the display was close to a router or when the parent unit was positioned over several thick walls.
Another thing that I found to affect the transmission range for this monitor is the battery charge. When the battery has been in use for more than 5 hours and is approaching 30%, the signal starts dropping and the easiest way to fix this is to recharge the parent unit battery.
This unit utilizes secure FHSS transmission technology, which is significantly more reliable compared to DECT monitors that do not encrypt their signals and are known to be more susceptible to interference. For instance, the Panasonic Long-Range Monitor has been recognized for maintaining good range but is plagued with bugs and features the most user-friendly interface imaginable. While DECT claims to transmit signals up to 1500 ft range, the quality of video and audio signals is terrible compared to Bonoch’s video and audio signals.
This monitor also impressed me with the SD card slot which makes it possible to record videos continuously for up to 48 days using a 128 GB MicroSD card. This feature made Bonoch stand out over Infant Optics DXR 8 Pro which we also considered for its stable long-range transmission.
What I also found to contribute to Bonoch’s long-distance transmission from its camera to the display unit is the large-capacity battery of 7800 mAh which is 5000 mAh bigger than Infant Optics Pro’s 2800 battery capacity. Battery power strength is known to increase the signal strength of the transmitting unit making it possible to go further distance compared to what it would normally do.
If you prefer a long-range baby monitor for big walls with an excellent rating when it comes to signal stability, consider Infant Optics DXR 8 Pro. It boasts of up to 1000 ft range as claimed by the manufacturer and it maintains connection up to 920ft range in open area with no obstructions.
When used indoors with thick walls, it reliably sends signals through 5 thick walls or 8 regular walls in a large home. The distance between the camera and the parent unit exceeded 70 ft, slightly shorter than Bonoch, but the signal connection stability was better in DXR 8 Pro. Its signal strength ranged from 3 and 5 bars when it was around 40 ft distance to when it was approaching its 70 ft range max indoors.
This DXR 8 Pro model doesn’t record as Bonoch but features HD video display of 720p which was slightly less clear compared to Bonoch’s 1080p HD display. Pro model also lacked in that it didn’t feature an SD card slot to allow for recording.
In situations where DXR 8 Pro model lost connection and was within the 70ft indoor range, we found it easy to boost its signal by simply adjusting the antennae to a vertical position. Eliminating devices that interfered with DXR 8’s signals such as WiFi routers and other wireless networks also significantly improved the transmission range.
When we counted the number of signal drops over 8 hours(single night), we had only 4 instances which is considerably less than Bonoch’s 6 instances and the original DXR 8’s 10+ instances. Infant Optics did make an effort to improve signal connection stability in their upgraded DXR 8 Pro model.
I was also impressed by the clarity of the audio signals from the Infant Optics DXR 8 Pro. Even when I increased the distance between the camera and the display unit, the static noise was minimal, thanks to the active noise-reduction feature built into the speaker. For example, when we placed the camera on the first floor and walked to the opposite end of our large house, which is approximately 60 ft away, I could still hear my baby’s breathing without any distortion.
In a few instances, I was able to utilize its remote pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) feature to reposition the camera so it could capture a wider view of the nursery. This feature came in handy when my baby was moving around while sleeping and I wanted to keep an eye on him without having to physically enter the room.
For camping adventures, this Pro unit is excellent as it comes with a backup battery and very audible notifications when the signal gets lost. For example, during our camping trip, I could hear the continuous beeps when we were outside the monitored range and the notifications would stop once we were back in range. No need to restart the device or to repair it to restore the connection. It automatically picks up the signal once it is back in range.
It didn’t bother me much but some people may find the beeping alert notification when the monitor is out of range to be annoying. It is a small price to pay for the convenience and peace of mind this baby monitor offers.
For the audio baby monitor with the longest range ideal for thick walls, consider the VTech VM1211. Our tests showed it can penetrate 6 walls and reach 110 ft, while BabyGearLab’s testing revealed it exceeded 7 walls and reached a range of 170 ft. This is super impressive and is partly contributed by its use of latest telecommunication technology called DECT 6.0 which has been fine-tuned for distance and is employed in most walkie-talkies.
While we didn’t compare Vm1211 with the Hatch Rest monitor in our testing, BGL’s testing found that VM1211 is almost comparable to the Hatch Rest+ sound machine which also acts as a Wi-Fi-based audio baby monitor.
When we tabulated its instances of signal drop, it was the lowest. But that could be because we used it in an interference-free environment, as is our standard testing process. While its signal experienced some static when interference was introduced, it was not frequent enough to be a cause of concern.
Compared to DM111, this unit is a significant upgrade in that it features a baby-activated open mic, a high-sensitivity microphone with adjustable volume that can pick up even the faintest cries. It also has a night light and lullabies. The only downside is its permanent glow when turned on.
