If your baby monitor is constantly crashing or having sporadic unusual static noises, you may need to update its firmware. If you’ve reset your monitor multiple times and just can’t seem to figure out what the problem is, chances are that your monitor needs its firmware updated.

What is a baby monitor firmware update?

Firmware is the software that is embedded in the baby monitor device – both the transmitter unit and the receiver unit. Essentially, the firmware is the software program in the hardware and ‘tells the hardware’ how to function. Every baby monitor has firmware that comes with the baby monitor device. The software is stored in the device’s “Read Only Memory”(ROM) of baby monitor and so it is unaffected by battery power.

A firmware update is meant to optimize the performance of the firmware or device driver, enhancing the performance of the processor. It works to improve the stability of your device, fix bugs and security issues, and add new features. Without regular firmware updates, you may experience problems with your monitor’s functionality and overall performance.

My first experience where I had to update my baby monitor firmware got me frustrated as I thought, ‘Why not design a monitor that doesn’t need to be regularly updated?’ I ended up following some 10+ steps and successfully updated my monitor’s firmware but since then, I have been against brands that require manual firmware updates and you may have seen that in some of my reviews.

One such monitoring brand is Eufy which has a series of non-wifi monitors (E110 and E220) and WiFi monitor(T8360). Since 2019, barely 20 months after the release of the E110 model(T8300), Eufy started sharing firmware updates on its website requiring customers who had the E110 to download and install.

Types of monitor firmware updates:

Most non-Wi-Fi monitors require you to update the firmware manually as they cannot connect to Wi-Fi. They post the new firmware on their website(manufacturer’s websites) and you’ll need to download and follow instructions.

Some go an extra step to provide a helpful tutorial video on how to go about updating your monitor. Eufy Monitors being non-Wi-Fi require you to manually update their firmware. This is part of the reason why Infant Optics Pro came ahead of Eufy Pro in the ranking of the 7 best non-wifi baby monitors in 2024

Wi-Fi monitors are easier to update as they can automatically connect to the internet and check for any available firmware updates. You can set your monitor to update automatically, so you don’t have to worry about manually checking for updates. However, it is still important to regularly check for updates and install them promptly in case of any security fixes or compatibility improvements.

Benefits of updating your baby monitor firmware:

Note that you should not avoid updating your monitor’s firmware. Old firmware is a safety hazard in your home as hackers could take advantage of the security loopholes that may have been identified.

Regularly maintaining your monitor through updates is crucial. If neglected, the firmware becomes increasingly vulnerable to security risks, potentially leading to getting hacked or getting a blank screen or both audio and video not working. Most firmware updates are meant to enhance the security level of your monitor so you are always ahead of any perverts trying to hack your monitor.

Solves compatibility issues:

Moreover, not keeping your monitor’s firmware up to date may also result in issues with compatibility with other devices, such as smartphones or tablets. As technology continues to evolve and new devices are released, firmware updates need to keep up with these changes.

Introduce new features and enhancements:

In addition, manufacturers often release firmware updates with new features or enhancements to the performance of the monitor. By keeping your monitor’s firmware up to date, you can take advantage of these updates and improve your overall user experience.

Fix bugs:

In addition, firmware updates can also improve the overall user experience of your device. They can introduce new features, fix bugs, and improve the overall performance of your monitor. Therefore, it is important to regularly check for firmware updates and install them to ensure that you are getting the best possible experience from your monitor.

I have been eagerly awaiting software and firmware updates from certain monitor brands. I hope that these updates will address some bothersome notification features, such as the scary false red alerts or excessively loud beeping noises, used to indicate low battery levels. Some brands have wildly inaccurate temperature readings while others have significant issues connecting to Wi-Fi or pairing both the camera and handheld or the camera and the app.

Saves you money:

Apart from enhancing performance and security, firmware updates can also lead to long-term cost savings. By regularly updating firmware, you can minimize the need for costly repairs or bug fixes. Additionally, it guarantees seamless compatibility among device peripherals, eliminating delays and improving overall performance.

Before updating your baby monitor firmware:

Performing a firmware update on baby monitors, like any other electronic device that utilizes processors and multiple drivers, carries inherent risks. For instance, a power outage during the update can potentially damage the device, while a low battery that drains during the process may corrupt the software, rendering it unusable. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure a stable power source and sufficient battery life before initiating a firmware update. By taking these precautions, you can safeguard your device and prevent any potential issues.

Additionally, make sure that you update your monitor’s firmware with the right version. If your monitor’s model number is BTY04, make sure you’re downloading and uploading firmware specifically for your BTY04 model. Using a wrong firmware version can lead to compatibility issues and may even cause permanent damage to your device.

During updating:

It is crucial to not interrupt or stop the update process once it has begun. This can cause irreversible damage to your monitor and may even void its warranty. It is best to let the update run its course, which may take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour depending on your device.

After updating:

Once the firmware update is complete, it is recommended to reset or restart your monitor for the changes to fully take effect. You can also check for any new features or settings that may have been added with the update and make sure they are configured according to your preferences.

How to update baby monitor firmware:

Step 1: Check for updates

First, check if there are any available firmware updates for your baby monitor. This can usually be done through the manufacturer’s website or through their official app.

Step 2: Download the firmware

Once you have confirmed that there is an update available, download the firmware file to your computer. Make sure you are downloading the correct version for your specific model.

Step 3: Transfer the firmware to your computer

First, transfer the downloaded firmware to your computer and unzip it as it is often available in the .zip format. Name the camera firmware differently from the monitor firmware.

Step 4: Start the update process:

To connect your camera and monitor to your computer, use a data/USB cable. Copy the camera firmware file to your computer and then paste it into the camera storage. Repeat the same process for the monitor firmware.

Upgrading the monitor can take up to 10 mins but the camera firmware upgrade shouldn’t take more than 2 mins.

After the upgrade, you may see the new firmware version on the screen. Some brands don’t show it though so don’t expect it. Your camera and monitor may just restart after the upgrade.

How to update Eufy Baby Monitor Firmware:

Step 1: Find the latest firmware on Eufy’s website:

Eufy has a page on its website with a PDF manual containing links with all the latest firmware upgrade versions for different Eufy Baby Monitors, 3 versions of E110 and 2 versions of E210.

Click on the PDF to get the manual.

Here is a link with a firmware update for Eufy T8300 and T8301 cameras and monitors(zip folder). You can’t open it as a PDF but can download it to your computer. You can also go to Eufy’s page with the link above.

If your Eufy monitor model starts with T8302, get this zip file with the latest 3.7.1 firmware version.

On your computer, you should see a file similar to the one below;

Step 3: Start by upgrading the monitor:

Connect your computer to the monitor using a USB cable. Make sure your computer recognizes the monitor when you connect.

Copy the monitor.bin or monitor_T8302.bin folder on your computer and paste it to a file named SN93701PU on the baby monitor. According to Eufy Spaceview firmware upgrade manual, this process should take 5 to 6 minutes. Make sure you keep the connection between Eufy monitor and your computer on.

You can go to the menu then click ‘…’ and then ‘Connect with us’ on the menu option and you can see the displayed firmware version. It should correspond with 3.7.1 version.

Step 4: Upgrade the camera:

Connect the computer to the Eufy camera using USB data cable. Make sure the computer recognizes the camera. You should see a folder named SN93700BU. Copy the camera.bin or camera_T83xx.bin folder on your computer hard drive and paste it on your Eufy camera folder, SN93700BU. It took me less than a minute and the camera restarted after a successful upgrade.
