The Upgraded Hellobaby Baby Monitor offers a 5-inch LCD screen at nearly half the price of the Infant Optics DXR 8 Pro, while still providing a plethora of impressive features that rival its counterpart. But that’s not the only difference between HB6550Pro and DXR 8 Pro.

In this guide, I have elaborated in detail the key differences between the upgraded Hellobaby HB6550 and the latest Infant Optics DXR 8 Pro. Both of these units are among our top non-wi-fi baby monitors.

Let’s start with the similarities between the two devices;

Similarities between Infant Optics and Hellobaby:

  • Screen Size: Both HB6550 and DXR 8 Pro come with a large 5-inch LCD screen, making it easy for parents to monitor their baby.
  • No split-screen: Despite both monitors supporting up to 4 cameras, none of them support split-screen viewing. HB6550 allows you to scan between camera every 10 seconds while DXR 8 Pro gives you the option to scan between different cameras every 12 seconds.
  • Non-Wi-Fi: Both monitors do not rely on Wi-Fi for connectivity, ensuring a secure and interference-free connection between the camera and the parent unit. They utilize FHSS transmission technology known to be hackproof and guarantee 100% signal privacy. They also utilize digital encryption on top of the security that comes with frequency hoping technology to give you peace of mind.
  • Remote Pan/Tilt/Zoom: You can remotely control the camera to pan, tilt or zoom the camera to get a better view of your baby and your baby’s nursery
  • Antennae: To boost signal transmission both units have antennae installed in both the camera and the parent unit
  • Kickstand: TO make it easy to mount the screen display, both units have kickstands that you can use to place the display on your bedside table, shelf or anywhere you feel comfortable with.
  • Sleep/VOX Mode: Both units have an eco-mode setting that turns off the screen to save power and only lights up when there is activity in your baby’s room. The feature comes in handy, especially at night when you do not want to be disturbed by the bright glow of the screen.
  • Temperature Sensor: Both units display the temperature of your nursery on the parent unit, allowing you to keep an eye on whether it’s too hot or cold for your baby.
  • Two-Way Audio: Both units allow you to communicate with your baby remotely through the parent unit. This is useful for soothing your baby back to sleep or talking to them when they are in their room.
  • Night vision: Both units have night vision mode that automatically turns on when it detects low-light conditions for example at dusk.
  • Temperature sensors: Like most other baby monitors, the temperature readings in both HB6550 and DXR 8 Pro are often wrong by up to 7 degrees Fahrenheit. You may want to consider getting a standalone thermostat as most temperature sensors in baby monitors are inaccurate as the camera heat usually distorts the readings.
  • Add-on Camera: Both units have add-on camera that you can easily get on Amazon.

Key Differences between Hellobaby HB6550 and Infant Optics DXR 8 Pro:

  • Pan and Tilt: HB6550 gives you the ability to pan or to horizontally move the camera up to 355° and vertically up to 120° degrees to give you a larger view of your baby’s room. On the other hand, DXR 8 Pro allows you to pan up to 270 degrees horizontally and up to 108 degrees vertically but can get a wide-angle lens sold on Amazon separately to increase the pan capabilities. On the aspect of pan and tilt alone, HB6550 surpasses DXR 8 Pro as it covers a larger area and Pro’s field of view is quite limited without a wide-angle lens.
  • Zoom: In terms of digital zoom, DXR 8 Pro excels with up to 6x digital zoom compared to the smaller 2x digital zoom HB6550. If you want to be able to use digital zoom and have clear images, go for DXR 8 Pro. However, it should be noted that digital zoom usually results in a reduction of image quality as the pixels are stretched to fill the frame. Nevertheless, DXR 8 Pro wins in the zoom feature.
  • Lullabies: If you want a monitor with superior soothing capabilities that comes installed with pre-recorded lullabies, go for HB6550 as it has 8 lullabies that you can play with your baby to soothe them baby to sleep when they’re crying. On the other hand, DXR 8 Pro lacks this feature and while both have a 2-way talkback feature to perhaps talk to your little one and get them to sleep, lullabies are just more effective at calming little ones. Note that lullabies in HB6550 lasts for about an hour and not all night and might want to get Hatch if you want the lullabies to go all night.
  • Interchangeable lens: If you want a monitor that allows you to customize camera performance by switching to different lenses on the camera in just seconds, go for DXR 8 Pro as it allows you to switch between wide-angle, standard, and zoom lenses. On the other hand, HB6550 only has the option of a standard lens and cannot be switched. Note that you’ll need to purchase a zoom lens and a wide-angle lens separately.
  • Night vision colors: The upgraded HB6550 Pro has night vision colors with a subtractive filter to reduce its chances of impacting your baby’s sleep. If you are worried about Infant Optics’ red glow from infrared LEDs around the main camera, go for HB6550Pro.
  • Screen brightness: While HB6550Pro has an upgraded screen compared to HB6550-1 with a warmer contrast good for eye protection, it doesn’t surpass DXR 8 Pro’s screen brightness control options. I found Infant Optics to provide a much lower dimmer option compared to Hellobaby’s lowest screen brightness option.
  • Battery life: HB6550Pro has a 3500 mAh battery capacity compared to Infant Optics Pro’s 2800 mAh battery capacity and trying them both demonstrates how HB6550pro has a slight edge over DXR 8 Pro. While Hellobaby markets that HB6550 lasts up to 30 hours, you can expect it to last for about 5 to 7 hours in full monitoring and over 10 hours with eco-mode. On the other hand, full monitoring with DXR 8 Pro lasts around 5 hours and up to 8 hours on eco-mode. If your main consideration in battery life, I’d recommend HB6550pro.
  • Battery replacement: You should, however, note that HB6550’s battery cannot be replaced once it drains. You can’t purchase another one but will have to rely on plugging it into AC throughout. On the other hand, when your DXR 8 Pro battery drains after some months, you can purchase a replacement and replace it. You can also get a battery backup for DXR 8 Pro with a 10,000 mAh capacity.
  • Monitor replacement: If you crack HB6550’s screen, you can’t buy a screen replacement and may have to get another monitor if it is out of warranty. On the other hand, you can purchase a replacement screen for DXR 8 Pro on Amazon.
  • Range: While both units claim to have a range of 1000 ft., Infant Optics does much better maintaining consistent range and not dropping signal frequently compared to Hellobaby’s HB6550pro. If you live in a large house or a house with thick walls and are worried about the connectivity of the signal, go for DXR 8 Pro. We have a dedicated guide on pairing Hellobaby.
  • Warranty: If you are concerned about the durability of your monitor and want a super long warranty and more reliable support, go for DXR 8 Pro as it has a standard 12-month warranty extendable by another 24 months if you register your warranty after purchase giving you a total of 36 months warranty! On the other hand, Hellobaby has a standard 1-year warranty.
  • Audio: If you prefer a unit without any background noise and clear audio from your baby, go for DXR 8 Pro as they’ve invested in an active noise-reducing technology that filters out background noise. And that’s not all. I also found DXR 8 Pro’s 1000w speaker to be much superior in giving you much clearer sounds. Its audio is much better compared to Hellobaby’s HB6550pro.
